January 31, 2015 To: The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New York Members of the New York State Legislature On behalf of the Board of Directors of the New York State Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund Corporation, I am pleased to present this annual report for 2014. This filing shows that the Thoroughbred breeding industry in the Empire State continues to make strides in recovering from the declines that affected the industry nationwide beginning several years ago. In fulfilling its mission to “support by monetary incentives the responsible breeding of quality Thoroughbred racehorses in keeping with the founding legislation to preserve New York’s irreplaceable farm land,” the Fund herein lays out all revenue, award payments, research funding, promotional spending and operational improvements made over the course of the year. The reputation of NY-breds was further enhanced during 2014 due to the performances of NY-breds in both restricted and open-company races, and was topped by the Breeders’ Cup turf win by Dayatthespa who was voted Eclipse Turf winner in mid-January of 2015. As called for in our founding legislation, the vast majority of the Fund’s revenues went right back into the economy in the form of breeder, owner and stallion owner awards and purse enrichment payments to both NYRA and Finger Lakes. The awards administered by the Fund were paid accurately, efficiently and fairly, based on the performances of registered NY-breds at Thoroughbred tracks in New York State. The Fund’s promotional spending is aimed at helping create demand for registered NY-breds, promoting the responsible breeding of quality Thoroughbred racehorses, and recruiting better mares and stallions to participate in New York State’s breeding program. The two percent of revenue directed by statute to the Zweig Fund at Cornell University is being used to conduct equine research that often helps lead to medical breakthroughs benefitting both animals and humans.

A thorough examination of this report should help the reader understand why the head of the nation’s oldest Thoroughbred auction house pronounced that “The New York-bred breeding program is the premier statebred program in the United States.” Sincerely,

Tracy Egan Executive Director New York Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund One Broadway Center – Suite 601 Schenectady, NY 12305

Executive Review By Tracy Egan More than 40 years after the NYS Legislature created the New York Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund Corporation as a means of preventing dairy farms from falling off local tax rolls and of encouraging the breeding of racehorses on quality farm land, the signs are abundant that the mission is being achieved. Key industry observer Boyd Browning, President of Fasig-Tipton ‒ North America’s oldest Thoroughbred auction company ‒ places New York at the very top of regional programs. “The New York-bred breeding program is the premier state-bred program in the United States. It encourages Thoroughbred owners to purchase NY-breds & to race them in NY. As a result, both the quality and quantity of Thoroughbreds bred in NY have improved in recent years despite negative trends in many other states. The NY-bred award programs result in additional participation from industry members, which has a positive impact on the racetrack, on farms and on service providers in NY, and certainly in the sales ring.” The programs run by the NYTBDF can boast that in 2014: · · · · · · ·

NY-breds won 20 graded stakes races, including five Grade Ones Six more NY-breds became millionaires More NY-bred awards were distributed than ever before The New York foal crop grew for the third year in a row Twenty-two new Thoroughbred farms opened The Fund illustrated its respect for and commitment to ex-racehorses through a number of promotional spends for Thoroughbred retirement or re-training venues The Zweig Fund benefited from the largest-ever contribution from the Fund

The combination of $44.5 million in restricted purse money, plentiful chances to race in restricted company, and an enviable awards program have made NY-breds a must-own for any racing stable. GRADED STAKES Perhaps the most important illustration of their improved quality is how well NY-breds perform at the opencompany stakes level. New York-breds had another outstanding year in 2014, accounting for five Grade 1 stakes, seven Grade 2’s and eight Grade 3’s. Both Dayatthespa and Palace won a pair of Grade 1 stakes, and Dayatthespa was named Eclipse Champion Turf Female. In addition, Inimitable Romanee and Samraat each won two Grade 3 stakes. These are the kind of achievements the Board of Directors envisioned when it reworked the Fund’s mission statement in 2011 to call for “the responsible breeding of quality Thoroughbred racehorses.” That quality was further demonstrated to run deep, as 52 NY-breds topped $160,000 in earnings in 2014, and six achieved millionaire status during the year. Additionally, Showcase Day, a day of New York-bred stakes, had been so successful in previous years that the New York Racing Association held three of them ‒ two at Belmont Park and one for the first time at Saratoga ‒ in 2014.

STALLIONS For the sixth consecutive year, New York's stallion roster included at least six sires with annual Northern Hemisphere progeny earnings above $2 million, and that roster featured a noticeable new trend: stakes-winning class and, in particular, graded-stakes-winning talent. The Empire State's top 11 sires in 2014 were represented by 12 graded or group winners from New York to California to South America – the most ever, eclipsing the New York stallion roster's previous record of eight graded/group winners in 2010. New York and California were the only states outside of Kentucky standing at least three stallions with 2014 progeny earnings exceeding $4 million, with California's roster having been boosted by the recent addition of former New York-based stallion Bluegrass Cat, whose first Empire State-conceived offspring will be two-year-olds of 2015. About the same time that Bluegrass Cat departed, New York's relatively young roster of top-end stallions was boosted by the arrival from Kentucky of 2008 Eclipse Champion Big Brown, who weeks later (December 20) was represented by a Grade 1-winning (and undefeated) juvenile in California. The spirited rivalry between New York's two leading sires, Freud and Posse – waged since the latter arrived in the Empire State late in 2009 – continued, with both topping $4 million in annual Northern Hemisphere progeny earnings for the fourth and sixth times, respectively. Freud's lifetime Northern Hemisphere progeny earnings – all from offspring conceived in New York – approached $33 million. Five-time Grade 1 winner Congaree, who stood his first New York season in 2010, was represented by a new Grade 1 winner in 2014 and now owns the unique distinction of having sired Grade 1 winners on dirt, turf and synthetic. NY-BREDS AT AUCTION IN 2014 New York-bred performances in the sales ring held onto gains established in 2013 by weanlings and yearlings, and the third leg of the sales stool ‒ two-year-olds ‒ showed more gains than the other two segments. Buyers aimed for NY-bred juveniles due to NYRA’s expanded two-year-old stakes programs and fat stakes purses. BECOMING A NEW YORK-BRED In order to encourage breeders to keep their mares and foals at New York State farms, the Fund has firm rules that must be followed to ensure that a foal that is dropped here is eligible to become a registered NY-bred. Breeders must make sure that their mares follow our residency rules, which in some cases necessitates that they be bred back to a registered NY stallion, that they file mare movement cards to help us establish compliance, and that they allow their mares to be inspected by our registry compliance team. It follows that only Thoroughbreds registered by the Fund by virtue of meeting the residency and inspection requirements can be entered in NY-bred-only races held at race meets run by the New York Racing Association and Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack. Similarly, only registered NY-breds can generate awards for their breeders and owners, as well as for the owners of their registered New York stallions. NY-breds can also run in any “open” races in this state and throughout the world. Those who buy and own racehorses appreciate that with a NY-bred there will be more chances to earn money. Our horses can win a maiden race, any number of claiming races and two NY-bred restricted allowance races before turning around and running in the same allowance conditions against open company. That earnings potential has led to some sparkling results in the sales ring. REVENUE A record level of operating revenue, $22,096,393, was recorded by the Fund in 2014. Nearly 55% of revenue in the calendar year came from the VLT operation at Resorts World New York City, which for the first time paid the full statutory amount of 1.5 percent for the entire year. Revenue reached this record level in spite of the fact

that handle revenue fell off more than anticipated at the NYRA tracks, and both handle and VLT revenue at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack declined more than expected as well. AWARDS AND PURSE ENRICHMENT Breeders, owners and stallion owners earned more than $17.8 million in awards in 2014, an overall increase of 12% compared with 2013. These awards help our stakeholders pay school and property taxes, employee salaries, and farm-related expenses ranging from blacksmithing to registration fees. These and other spends made by our stakeholders, combined with money from all equine pursuits in the Empire state, contribute more than $4 billion to the agricultural, entertainment, sporting and tourist segments of the state’s economy. EQUINE RESEARCH The annual Harry M. Zweig research report from Cornell University is posted on the Fund’s website. IMPROVEMENTS TO FUND ACCOUNTING PRACTICES Structure - The Registrar’s data has been utilized as the source for recording registry income to enable the recording of income by type of foal (weanling, yearling, etc.). This is important because it illuminates in the financial reports the timing of client registration of their foals, and should alert readers as to trends. In addition, modifications to the Registrar’s worksheet have improved efficiency, thereby saving time. Efficiencies -Significant effort has been expended in defining the award system re-write requirements for which realization of efficiency gains is slated for 2016. Control - A Comptroller was hired in January 2014, providing full-time in-house financial expertise. Improvements introduced by the Comptroller include the following: ·

Bank of America’s “Positive Pay” was implemented for the awards account in order to enforce additional security features that quickly identify suspicious items, thereby lessening the opportunity for check fraud.

·

Racing information has now been incorporated into the financial statements to inform readers regarding trends developing within the racing community. This has allowed for significant improvement in the presentation of financials, and has provided a new level of understanding of the information behind the awards.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS The 2014 report details highlights of NY-bred accomplishments on the racetrack and in the sales ring, and also provides a detailed accounting of the receipts and disbursements in the Breeding Fund’s three incentive areas ‒ breeder awards, stallion awards, and open-company owner awards. Overview of Program Awards Paid in 2014 Please note that the award money paid to breeders, stallion owners and open-company owners during 2014 included periods one through five (January through October 2014) as well as the previous year’s period six (November and December 2013) and the payout of the ten-percent holdback from 2013. Awards earned in period six of 2014 (November and December) were not paid out until January 2015. The ten-percent holdback from 2014 was also paid out in January 2015. Supplemental payments totaling more than $2.4 million will be made in 2015 after an outside audit company completes its review in March.

Breeder Awards - In 2014, the New York State Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund paid $12,823,774 to breeders of registered New York-breds. A breeder is the owner of a mare at the time she foals in New York State. Breeder award rates are determined based on the covering stallion. Stallion Owner Awards - The New York State Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund distributed $3,031,327 in 2014 stallion owner awards. These awards are paid to owners of registered New Yorkbased (at the time of conception) covering stallions. Please note that only New York-bred progeny of New York-based stallions are eligible to earn stallion owner awards. Stallion owner awards have been increased to 10% of purses earned from finishes in first through third place. All stallion owner awards are capped at $10,000 per horse, per race.

Open-Company Owner Awards - Owners of registered New York-breds who earned purse money in open-company races were paid $1,968,200 by the New York State Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund in 2014. For all open-company races in New York State with a minimum claiming price of $30,000, there are two tiers of owner awards:

Financial Review Under founding statutes, the Fund receives revenue from on-track and off-track thoroughbred handle in New York, breakage from regional off-track wagers and from track based Video Lottery Terminals (VLTs). Total 2014 operating revenues of $22 million were $2.6 million, or approximately 14%, higher than in 2013. Handle accounted for approximately 29% of revenue in 2014, down from 34% in 2013, while breakage totaled 2% of revenue in 2014, down from 3% in 2013. In 2004, the Fund obtained an additional contractual source of revenue from Video Lottery Terminals (VLTs) at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack (FLGR), which provided approximately 9% and 11% of total revenue for 2014 and 2013, respectively. Further significantly enhancing Fund revenues, the New York Racing Association (NYRA) began operation of VLTs at the Aqueduct racetrack’s casino (Resorts World Casino New York City) in late 2011. Statutory revenue received from this operation was approximately $12 million in 2014 and $10 million in 2013, or 55% and 52% of total 2014 and 2013 revenue, respectively. This increase was due in part to change in the Net Win percentage from 1.25% to 1.5% that took effect October 28, 2013. Effective January 1, 2014, legislation provided for the Fund to receive additional revenues from Advanced Deposit Wagering (ADW) sources. Total ADW revenue for 2014 was $930,000, or 4% of total Fund revenue, as of December 31, 2014. Due to the increase in revenues for 2014 and 2013, the Fund was able to significantly increase breeder, stallion and owner award payouts and purse enrichments by adding a supplemental award payout of approximately $2.4 million. As a result, award expense was $17.8 million in 2014 compared to $15.8 million in 2013, a 12% increase. Amount Earned Amount Earned % of Revenue % of Revenue 2014 2013 Increase 2014 2013 Breeders $ 12,823,774 $ 11,263,094 14% 58.04% 57.95% Stallion 3,031,327 2,789,603 9% 13.72% 14.35% Owners 1,968,200 1,791,964 10% 8.91% 9.22% $ 17,823,301 $ 15,844,661 12% 80.66% 81.52%

In addition, the Fund allocated $2 million for purse enrichment in 2014, an increase of $500,000 from the $1.5 million budgeted in 2013. The money was split according to statutory requirements, with sixty percent ($1.2 million) paid to Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack and forty percent ($800,000) paid to NYRA for the purpose of bolstering purse amounts for NY-bred races. By closely monitoring administration and promotional expenses, the Fund was able to remain well below statutory spending caps of 5% and 6%, respectively, in 2014. Administration expenses of $672,000 represented 3% of revenues in 2014. Promotional expenses of $1,025,000 represented less than 5% of 2014 revenues. We feel it is also significant to note that in 2014 the Fund spent $76,000 of its promotional budget to aid NY organizations that provide Thoroughbred aftercare or promote the use of retired racehorses in second careers. Statutes dictate that the Fund pay the Harry M. Zweig Memorial Fund of Cornell University 2% of Fund operating revenues to fund equine research. Due to increased revenues, the amount payable to Cornell University increased approximately $53,000 over the 2013 amount, to $442,000 in 2014.

Mares & Foals Mare Report New York State can boast that in 2014 its foal crop increased for the third year in a row, despite Jockey Club estimates that the national foal crop in 2014 declined by 4.3% from the projected 2013 figure of 23,000 foals. As shown in the NYS Foal Production chart on page 44, 1,603 live foals were born in the state during 2014. The increase of 69 foals over the 2013 crop represents a year-to-year increase of more than 4%. Significantly, the foal crop of 2014 represents a better than 30% increase over New York’s lowest foal crop in 2011, when just 1,225 foals hit the ground in the Empire State. By the end of 2014, the Jockey Club was predicting that the final count for the national foal crop for the year would be 22,000, and that the crop size would level off in 2015 at that same level. As shown in the US Foal Production chart on page 98, the national foal crop ranged between 32,000 and 35,000 from 2002 to 2008, and it was the economic downtown in 2008 that led to the steady decline seen in subsequent years. This year the Fund’s annual report includes some additional data, rather than just the number of mares bred to NY sires and to out-of-state sires, in order to provide a clearer picture of what’s behind the foalcrop numbers. Using the foal-crop report of 2014 and the mares-bred report of 2013, data was compiled to determine the outcome for each mare bred. The chart below quantifies three significant factors that influenced the live-foal count: 1) mares that were barren, 2) mares that left the state and 3) mares and foals that died. By definition, a non-resident mare must foal in NY, remain in the state for at least 90 days after foaling, and be bred back to a registered NY stallion before returning to its home state to make that year’s foal eligible to be registered as a NY-bred. The first requirement, that the mare must foal in NY, puts that year’s foal in the foal crop, but the mare is not included in the “mares bred” number of the previous year. The second requirement, that the mare must be bred back before returning to its home state, means that the mare is included in the “total mares bred” number, but in most cases the foal is born out-of-state the following year, as shown in the “left the state” figures. The 2014 live-foal figure of 1,603 includes foals that did not have a corresponding dam in the Mares Bred Report (21), which are accounted for by the lack of reporting on the part of the stallion owners (17) and by non-resident mares that came into NY to foal (4). For the purposes of this count, “live foals” are foals that farms reported as having stood and nursed, even in cases in which they died shortly thereafter. It should be noted that the percentage of live foals to mares bred of 64% is comparable to equine standards of 65%. The significantly higher percentage of live foals resulting from resident mares bred out-of-state (77%) is due primarily to the lower barren rate. It is believed that the primary reason for this is that resident mares shipped out of state for breeding are confirmed to be in foal before being shipped back to New York State.

Stallion Review For the sixth consecutive year in 2014, New York's stallion roster included at least six sires with annual Northern Hemisphere progeny earnings above $2 million, and that roster featured a noticeable new trend: stakes-winning class and, in particular, graded-stakes-winning talent. The Empire State's top 11 sires in 2014 were represented by 12 graded or group winners from New York to California to South America – the most ever, eclipsing the New York stallion roster's previous record of eight graded/group winners set in 2010. New York and California were the only states outside of Kentucky standing at least three stallions that had 2014 progeny earnings exceeding $4 million, with California's roster having been boosted by the recent addition of former New York-based stallion Bluegrass Cat, whose first Empire State-conceived offspring are 2-year-olds of 2015. About the same time that Bluegrass Cat departed, New York's relatively youngish roster (compared, say, to California's) of top-end stallions was boosted by the arrival from Kentucky of 2008 Eclipse Champion Big Brown, who weeks later (December 20) was represented by a Grade 1-winning (and undefeated) juvenile in California. The spirited rivalry between New York's two leading sires, Freud and Posse – waged since the latter arrived in the Empire State late in 2009 – continued in 2014, with both topping $4 million in annual Northern Hemisphere progeny earnings for the fourth and sixth times, respectively. Freud's lifetime Northern Hemisphere progeny earnings – all from offspring conceived in New York – approached $33 million. Five-time Grade 1 winner Congaree, who stood his first New York season in 2010, was represented by a new Grade 1 winner in 2014 and now owns the unique distinction of having sired Grade 1 winners on dirt, turf, and synthetic. New York's stallion roster has never been better. Thirty-one of the 73 New York-bred stakes winners in 2014 were sired by New York-based stallions and/or were conceived in New York, including Grade 2 winner Zivo (by True Direction), and other graded winners Samraat (by Noble Causeway), Lubash (by Freud) and Hot Stones (by Bustin Stones). Zivo, Lubash and other newly minted (in 2014) New York-bred millionaires Dayatthespa, Discreet Marq, Palace and Be Bullish boosted the total number of millionaires bred in the Empire State to 33. Prior to 1985, that number stood at zero. Other significant statistics emerging from 2014 concern the 21 New York-breds that won black-type stakes outside of state-bred or state-sired company in 2014, two-thirds (14) of which were graded winners, with half of those being homebreds, including Zivo, Samraat and Lubash, as well as Grade 1 winner Artemis Agrotera. The New York breeding program has enhanced the popularity of breeding to race, even at the elite graded level, and that popularity frequently encourages owner-breeders to book mares to in-state stallions in order to fully capitalize on both breeder and open-company owner awards. At the highest levels of racing, 2014 was another best-ever year for New York-breds, with 14 graded winners of 20 graded stakes (versus 13 graded winners of 16 graded events in an excellent 2013), including three Grade 1 winners of five Grade 1 events, two Eclipse Champion finalists, and Eclipse Champion Dayatthespa. Scheduled to stand in 2015 in New York are 10 of the 12 in-state stallions whose 2014 progeny earnings topped $1 million, including 2014 multi-millionaire sires Freud, Posse, Big Brown and Congaree, plus leading New York-based first-crop sire Desert Party. The following is a summary of those roster leaders: FREUD (Storm Cat – Mariah's Storm, by Rahy), who led the New York sire list for the second season in 2014, was again represented by winners regardless of surface or distance. Owned by a partnership and standing at Sequel Stallions New York in Hudson, the full brother to Giant's Causeway has resided in New York since entering stud in 2002. His seven stakes winners in 2014 – bringing his total to 41 – illustrated his offspring's varied talents: two stakes winners on dirt and five on turf, at distances ranging from six furlongs (in 1:07.99) to 2,400 meters (about a mile and a half). They included graded-winning millionaire Lubash, who races for ownerbreeder Leonard Pivnick's Aliyu Ben J Stables, plus two major-winning Argentine-bred 3-year-olds – a Group 46

1-winning miler on dirt in Peru and a Group 2 winner at a mile and a half on turf in Argentina. Freud's 2014 stakes winners consisted of a 2-year-old, three 3-year-olds, two 5-year-olds, and one 7-year-old (Lubash, who according to his trainer, Christophe Clement, will be back for 2015). Sire of Northern Hemisphere earners of $4,505,272 in 2014, Freud's earlier stakes winners include three Grade/Group 1 winners on dirt. POSSE (Silver Deputy – Raska, by Rahy), who like Freud also topped $4 million in 2014 progeny earnings (for the sixth consecutive year), is owned by a syndicate and stands at Rockridge Stud in Hudson. Posse was represented by eight stakes winners at six different tracks in five states in 2014, and is arguably one of the premier speed sires in North America. His Grade 1 winners on dirt and synthetic include a sprint champion millionaire and a multiple Grade 1-winning sprinter-miler millionaire. Since arriving in New York, Posse has topped the state's sire list four consecutive times, and was the leading New York-based sire of winners (with 93) in 2014. Four of Posse's eight stakes winners in 2014 were New York-conceived juveniles, and the other four consisted of a 3-year-old and three older runners, suggesting that the future looks bright for the former recordsetting sprinter. Posse had progeny earnings of $4,325,697 in 2014, has sired 26 stakes winners, and his runners cumulatively have earned more than $30 million. BIG BROWN (Boundary – Mien, by Nureyev) was represented by his first Grade 1 winner (an unbeaten trackrecord-setting juvenile from his third crop), his 11th stakes winner of 2014, and his 14th stakes winner from three crops within about six weeks following the announcement that he was moving to New York. The 2008 Eclipse Champion 3-year-old male and dual classic winner was tied for first as North America's leading thirdcrop sire of lifetime stakes winners through 2014, and was North America's second-leading third-crop sire by number of stakes winners in 2014. Also New York's leading juvenile sire of 2014 with 2-year-old winners of lucrative stakes on both dirt and turf, Big Brown is among the most fortuitous acquisitions ever to enhance to the state's stallion roster. Like Freud and Posse, he also had 2014 progeny earnings exceeding $4 million ($4,210,556), boosting his cumulative offspring bankroll to more than $8 million. Owned by Big Brown Management, LLC, the 10-year-old stands at Dutchess Views Farm in Pine Plains. CONGAREE (Arazi – Mari's Sheba, by Mari's Book), a five-time Grade 1 winner of more than $3.2 million, has now sired Grade 1 winners on dirt (in 2014), turf and synthetic. Owned by his breeders, Janice and Robert McNair of Magnolia Stable, who brought him to New York in the fall of 2009, Congaree had 2014 stakes winners at a mile and an eighth on dirt (Grade 1) and turf (Grade 2), and at five furlongs on turf (in 55.54). Graded/group winners from Congaree's first crop included a champion 3-year-old filly in Ireland. Sire of the winners of $2,170,083 in 2014, Congaree stands at Saratoga Stud, LLC in Stillwater. STONESIDER (Giant's Causeway – Added Gold, by Gilded Time) had New York-bred second-crop stakes winners Galiana and Sinistra in 2014, suddenly elevating this big son of Giant's Causeway into the ranks of New York's leading sires. Like Congaree, he also is a homebred owned by Janice and Robert McNair of Magnolia Stable, and won his only start as a 2-year-old at Belmont, beating a future Grade 1 winner in the process. Stonesider's daughter Galiana, who races for owner-trainer Rodolfo Romero, practically owned the mid-Atlantic filly and mare sprint circuit from spring to fall in 2014, winning six races, including three sixfurlong stakes on dirt (one in 1:08.92) and a 5½-furlong turf dash. Stonesider's son, Sinistra, captured Saratoga's Evan Shipman Stakes under equal top weight at a mile and an eighth as a homebred for Joanne T. Shapoff's Chevalier Stable, spotting weight to the favored runner-up who a month later would place second to New Yorkbred Palace in Saratoga's Grade 1 Forego. Stonesider, who sired the earners of $1,972,034 in 2014, stands at Saratoga Stud, LLC in Stillwater. BOB AND JOHN (Seeking the Gold – Minister's Melody, by Deputy Minister) is a Grade 1 winner who has sired eight stakes winners to date from his four crops of racing age through 2014, including a brilliant 2014 juvenile stakes winner by more than seven lengths in 1:09.56 for six furlongs. His runners have won stakes on dirt, turf and synthetic, from six furlongs up to a mile (three times). Another homebred for Janice and Robert McNair of Magnolia Stable, who own him in partnership with Josephine Abercrombie's Pin Oak Stud of 47

Kentucky, Bob and John sired the earners of $1,596,304 in 2014. He stands at Saratoga Stud, LLC in Stillwater, and his first New York-conceived offspring are yearlings of 2015. CATIENUS (Storm Cat – Diamond City, by Mr. Prospector) has sired Grade 1 winners on turf and synthetic among his 26 stakes winners, including an earner of more than $1.9 million. Among the 47 winners in 2014 sired by Catienus was owner-trainer Kate Dalton's New York-bred steeplechase mare, Cat Feathers, who captured Saratoga's Mrs. Ogden Phipps Stakes for the second time in August, scoring by almost four lengths. Catienus, who had progeny earnings of $1,376,120 in 2014, is also the broodmare sire of two multi-millionaires and multiple Grade 1 winners. Owned throughout his stud career by Kenneth L. and Sarah K. Ramsey, Catienus has resided for most of that career in New York, and currently stands at McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds, LLC in Saratoga Springs. FROST GIANT (Giant's Causeway – Takesmybreathaway, by Gone West) picked up his fifth stakes winner from his first two crops when his 3-year-old Loki's Vengeance won a division of the New York Stallion Stakes at Aqueduct at odds-on for David Greenhouse's Blue Bison Stable last April. Winner of Belmont's Grade 1 Suburban Handicap on dirt following a multiple group stakes-winning career on turf as a 2-year-old and 3-yearold in Ireland, Frost Giant has also sired multiple turf stakes winner West Hills Giant ($534,649), who placed in four stakes in 2014. He was New York's record-setting freshman sire in 2012 and leading second-crop sire in 2013, and had 2014 progeny earnings of $1,286,782. Owned by FG Stallion, LLC, Frost Giant stands at Keane Stud in Amenia, where he will spend his seventh New York season at stud in 2015. BUSTIN STONES (City Zip – Shesasurething, by Prospectors Gamble) is an unbeaten New York-bred Grade 1 winner whose New York-bred first-crop 4-year-old daughter Hot Stones showed she was the real deal when she won Belmont's graded Bed o' Roses Handicap in 1:21.98 for seven furlongs on June 21. Hot Stones, a homebred owned by Roddy Valente, Charles Casale and Darlene Bilinski and bred by Dr. Jerry Bilinski in partnership with Roddy Valente, is out of a New York-bred daughter of Freud. Three weeks and a day after Hot Stones' Bed o' Roses victory, Bustin Stones' 2-year-old son Bustin It broke his maiden with a seven-length romp over future graded stakes winner and fellow New York-bred International Star in Belmont's Rockville Centre Stakes while racing for S J Bee Stable, Michael Mareina and Kuehne Racing. Sire of the earners of $1,122,808 in 2014, the increasingly popular Bustin Stones is syndicated and stands at Waldorf Farm in North Chatham, where he entered stud in 2009. HERE'S ZEALOUS (Dehere – Zealous Connection, by Unreal Zeal) had his second consecutive million-dollar progeny earnings year in 2014, when his 27 winners boosted his annual offspring earnings to $1,088,296. Winner of Aqueduct's graded Gravesend Handicap by four lengths over a pair of Grade 1- or Grade 2-winning millionaires and out of a Grade 2-winning dam of three stakes winners, he is owned by and stands at Peter Kazamias' Kaz Hill Farm in Middletown, where he entered stud in 2006. Two winning sons of Here's Zealous in 2014 were also stakes-placed at Belmont and Monmouth last spring, and his New York-bred daughter Here's Zealicious ($317,329) won seven races – four at Belmont and Aqueduct – in 2014. DESERT PARTY (Street Cry [Ire] – Sage Cat, by Tabasco Cat) was New York's leading freshman sire in 2014 with nine Northern Hemisphere juvenile winners, including two stakes winners in the U.S., plus an additional Northern Hemisphere-foaled black-type stakes winner in Peru – all from his first crop. One of his stakes winners subsequently placed in Churchill Downs' Grade 2 Golden Rod Stakes on dirt, and two of his other winners also placed in stakes at Churchill Downs and Keeneland (the graded Dixiana Bourbon Stakes on turf). Winner of Saratoga's Grade 2 Sanford Stakes as a juvenile and a group stakes winner in the United Arab Emirates as a 3-year-old and 4-year-old, Desert Party already has the distinction of having sired first-crop winners at nine tracks in five nations in North America, South America and Europe. He is owned by Sheikh Mohammed's Darley and has stood at Sequel Stallions New York in Hudson since 2013. Desert Party's first New York-conceived offspring are yearlings. 48

New York-Bred Auction Summary * Sales statistics for New York-breds supplied by The Jockey Club; national sale statistics derived from the Blood-Horse Auctions Digest for 2014. OVERVIEW In 2014, when the watchwords for thoroughbred sales nationally were “strong” and “steady,” the market for New York-bred yearlings and weanlings followed suit and held on to the spectacular gains made in 2013. The somewhat unexpected headline of 2014 is that the market for the third important category of New York-bred sales horses, 2-year-olds in training, displayed a decided momentum of its own. The upshot is that the revolution in the New York-bred bloodstock market, sparked by the post-Genting boost in Fund awards and NYRA purse structure, has now spread to every major sector of the New York program’s sale horses. To review, in 2013 New York-bred yearlings and weanlings made headlines with across-the-board double-digit gains, posting increases that even outperformed the booming national market. From 2012 to 2013, the average price of yearlings nationwide increased 15 percent, while the average price for New York-bred yearlings rose 24 percent. In the same window, the weanling average nationwide was up 32 percent, while the average price for New York-bred weanlings rose 37 percent. Both groups by and large held on to these gains in 2014, giving the expansion of the New York-bred bloodstock market the look of a long-term phenomenon. Two-year-old sales in 2013 produced solid but not headline-making gains. In 2014, however, this group experienced a dramatic across-the-board expansion in the number of individuals sold, total sales and key indicators. It seems very likely that this upturn was spurred by a significant and well-publicized upgrade in NYRA’s 2-year-old stakes program. Specifically, NYRA added five more juvenile stakes races in 2014, and increased stakes purses for New York-bred 2-year-olds by $1,050,000. In all, in 2014 NYRA ran fourteen races for New York-bred juveniles worth $2,150,000. Statistical Review and Analysis of 2014 New York-Bred Yearling, Weanling and Two-Year-Old Sales Results Yearling Sales New York-bred yearlings for the most part held onto the 82-percent gain in total sales made in 2013 over 2012. Although both total sales and average corrected themselves by a couple of ticks, in the grand scheme of things such declines are negligible. The median price remained unchanged. To offer a somewhat broader picture, from 2012, which itself posted double-digit gains over the previous year, to 2014, total sales of New York-bred yearlings have risen 72 percent (from $15,313,800 to $26,285,700), while the average and median are up 19 percent and 20 percent, respectively. In 2012, only 36 individuals sold for six figures. In 2013 and 2014, 83 and 79 yearlings, respectively, brought $100,000 or more.

Yearlings 2012 (Change from Prior Year) 364 (+2%) $15,313,800 (+14%) $42,071 (+12%) $25,000 (+25%) $450,000 36

Top Achiever: The top-selling New York-bred yearling of 2014, and one of 17 Empire-bred yearlings to bring $200,000 or more at auction, was a bay colt by Awesome Again out of the stakes-producing Lord At War (Arg) mare Zambezi Belle. Purchased by the powerhouse team of Barbara Banke’s Stonestreet Stables and George Bolton for $700,000 during the select portion of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling sale (Hip 130), the colt was the co-fifth highest-priced yearling overall in this world-renowned boutique sale. Bred by Camelia J. Casby and foaled on February 18, 2013 at Hidden Lake Farm in Otisville, the colt’s five winning siblings are led by multiple stakes-winning New York-bred Law Enforcement (Posse), a $458,638 earner bred and campaigned by Casby. Weanling Sales In 2014, the average price for New York-bred weanlings lost some ground from 2013 (-5%), but the median maintained a steady state from year to year ($20,000). Essentially, as with the yearlings, this is a case of holding onto the spectacular gains made in 2013, when the entire New York-bred weanling market (total sales, average and median) increased by more than a third across the board. Chart II. New York-Bred Weanlings at Auction 2012-2014

No. Sold Total Sales Average Median Top Seller # $100K and over

Weanlings 2014 (Change from Prior Year) 110 (-11%) $3,491,400 (-15%) $31,740 (-5%) $20,000 (no change) $200,000 6

Weanlings 2013 (Change from Prior Year) 123 (+1%) $4,131,600 (+38%) $33,590 (+37%) $20,000 (+36%) $200,000 8

Weanlings 2012 (Change from Prior Year) 122 (+94%) $3,002,700 (+27%) $24,612 (-34%) $14,750 (-26%) $175,000 5

An additional trend in New York-bred weanling sales that revealed itself clearly this year is that the value of New York-bred weanlings at the marathon eleven-day Keeneland November sale, the prime venue for weanling sales in the United States, is on an upward trajectory. In 2012, New York-bred weanlings at Keeneland averaged $38,544 with a $27,000 median. In the same sale in 2013, New York-bred weanlings averaged $50,591 with a $37,000 median. In 2014, at the conclusion of eleven 62

sessions of trading, New York-breds sold for an average price of $56,621 and a median of $40,000. Everincreasing interest in New York horses at this important Kentucky sale bodes well for the future. Chart III. New York-Bred Weanlings at Keeneland November 2012-2014

No. Sold Average Median

Keeneland Weanlings 2014 (Change from Prior Year) 29 $56,621 (+5%) $40,000 (+4)

Keeneland Weanlings 2013 (Change from Prior Year) 44 $53,986 (+40%) $38,500 (+43%)

Keeneland Weanlings 2012 39 $38,544 $27,000

Top Achiever: In keeping with the trend noted above, the top New York-bred weanling was sold at one of the opening sessions of the Keeneland November sale, when BG Stables went to $200,000 to acquire Hip 292, a colt by Sidney’s Candy. Bred by SF Racing and foaled at Vinery NY at Sugar Maple in Poughquag on March 21, 2014, the chestnut colt is out of Evrobi, a winning daughter of Tabasco Cat. Evrobi has produced three winners, including Tell A Kelly by Tapit, who as a juvenile in 2010 won the Darley Debutante Stakes and finished second in the Oak Leaf and third in the Hollywood Starlet Stakes, all Grade 1 races. Two-Year-Old Sales As noted above in the overview, sales of New York-bred 2-year-olds in training constitute the 2014 headline for New York-bred sales. Buyers, often guided by New York-based trainers, were clearly on the lookout for virtually race-ready individuals who flashed talent at the sales in order to capitalize on NYRA’s lucrative, expanded stakes programs for juveniles (above). In 2013, the 2-year-old market posted a healthy gain in average and median of seven and twenty percent, respectively. In 2014, the number of individuals that changed hands was off the charts: up 68 percent. Total sales nearly doubled, increasing an astronomical 84 percent, and both major indicators posted gains, with the average up nine percent and the median up 17 percent. Finally, the number of individuals who sold for $100,000 and up increased a whopping 130 percent to 48 from 23 in 2013. Chart IV. New York-Bred Two-Year-Olds at Auction 2012-2014

* Figures in this chart exclude a 2-year-old colt foaled in New York and bred by Gallagher’s Stud who brought $400,000 at Fasig-Tipton’s Midlantic sale of 2-year-olds in training at Timonium (Hip 13). His dam was a nonresident mare and Gallagher’s opted not to breed her back to a New York stallion as required, making the foal ineligible to become a registered New York-bred.

63

Top Achiever: A dark bay/brown filly from the family of multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Affirmed Success emerged as the standout state-bred juvenile of the year. Selling as Hip 384 at the OBS spring 2-year-old sale, the filly was hammered down to New York trainer Gary Contessa, on behalf of Chip McEwen’s Wounded Warrior Stables, for $390,000. The filly had failed to meet her reserve at the Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Preferred sale in Saratoga last summer with a $90,000 bid. Bred by Jonathan Davis’s Milfer Farm, Inc., the filly is out of stakes producer My Success, a multiple New York-bred winner by A.P. Indy bred by Albert Fried, Jr. who was purchased in foal by Milfer Farm for $85,000 at the 2011 Keeneland November sale. The filly’s second dam is Towering Success, a half-sister to Grade 1 winners Exbourne and Expelled, and to graded winner Top Socialite, dam of $2.2-million earner Affirmed Success, who won the Carter Handicap, Cigar Mile Handicap and Vosburgh Stakes, all Grade 1 events. Conclusion The market for New York-breds at auction is robust in all three sectors. The strong performance of weanlings and yearlings in 2014 continues current trends and, barring any dramatic correction in the national market, breeders should feel optimistic about the outlook for 2015 and beyond. The 2-year-old market was the focal point for expansion in 2014, suggesting strongly that there was a direct correlation between both the expanded 2-year-old stakes purses and the 2-year-old stakes program at NYRA and the results in the auction ring. This stakes program has been replicated for 2015, so there is room for optimism in that arena as well in the new year.

64

New York-Breds at the Races Multiple New York-Bred Stars Win Graded Stakes in 2014 By Bill Heller Eight days in Saratoga last August told you all you need to know about the vitality of the New York-bred program in 2014. On August 23, Chester and Mary Broman’s homebred three-year-old filly Artemis Agrotera won the Grade I Ballerina Stakes, defeating another New York-bred star, Lady Sheila Stable’s La Verdad, who had already captured the Grade 2 Distaff Handicap. The following day, Jerry and Ronald Frankel, Steve Laymon and Bradley Thoroughbreds’ five-year-old mare Dayatthespa, bred by Castellare DiCraccchiolo Stable and Goldsher, won the Yaddo Stakes for New Yorkbreds. Why is that significant? Because that victory began a very significant three-race winning streak for Dayatthespa. She then won the Grade I First Lady at Keeneland, followed by the $2 million Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf, on the way to being named Eclipse Champion Turf Female. On August 28, Klaravich Stables and William Lawrence’s two-year-old colt Startup Nation won the Grade 2 With Anticipation Stakes on grass. On August 30, Antonino Miuccio’s five-year-old Palace, bred by The Peter J. Callahan Revocable Trust, stepped up to the plate in the Grade I Forego Stakes. Palace, whom Miuccio had claimed for $20,000, had already captured the Grade I Alfred G. Vanderbilt earlier in the Saratoga meet. In the Forego, he made it two straight Grade 1 victories. Gary Barber’s Big Business finished second to complete a New York-bred exacta in the Grade 1 stakes. In the very next race, Thomas Coleman’s homebred five-year-old horse Zivo, who had already won the Grade 2 Suburban Handicap, finished a solid fourth in the Grade 1 Woodward. Collectively, New York-breds won five Grade 1’s, seven Grade 2’s and 8 Grade 3’s in 2014. But the stakes winners weren’t the only accomplished New York-breds last year. Fifty-two state-breds topped $160,000 in earnings. It’s hard to believe that New York-breds have ever had a more substantial impact, not only nationally, but in New York as well. When the New York Racing Association isn’t content with just one Showcase Day – featuring as many as eight New York-bred stakes – and runs three of them as they did in 2014, there cannot be a better advertisement for the success of the New York breeding program. And everybody is noticing. That’s why Big Brown, the 2008 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner, was shipped to New York’s Dutchess Views Farm to stand in 2015, a development that prompted a story in the Wall Street Journal. Big Brown joins a group of New York-bred stallions who made a national impact last year, including Sequel Stallions’ Freud and Desert Party, Rockridge Stud’s Posse, Keane Stud’s Frost Giant and Waldorf Farms’ Bustin Stones. “New York-breds have had a tremendous year,” Palace and La Verdad’s trainer, Linda Rice, said. “I have watched the New York program grow. I always saw it as an advantage. I felt my clients had a better chance to get their expenses paid with the New York program. It’s worked out very well.” 65

Dayatthespa, Zivo and Startup Nation’s trainer, Chad Brown, is also an enthusiastic backer of the New York program. “It’s as strong as it’s ever been,” Brown said. “Certainly, the quality has been improving every year. Having a large business in New York, we’ve certainly had a lot of New York-breds that can run in open company.” Dayatthespa was one of them. The daughter of City Zip out of M’Lady Doc by Doc’s Leader has made all 18 of her starts on turf. She debuted on August 4, 2011 at Saratoga, winning a maiden special weight by four lengths. In just her second lifetime start, she finished second in the Grade 3 Natalma Stakes at Woodbine before finishing her first season by running a tiring ninth in a field of 14 in the Grade 2 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Filly Turf at Churchill Downs. “Very early in her career, when we started training her as a two-year-old at Saratoga, she breezed on the turf and she was exceptional,” Brown said. “I told the ownership group, ‘This is not your average New York-bred.’ She showed exceptional ability very early in her career. After her maiden win in New York-breds, she raced in open company. She bounced in and out of open company. We use the New York conditions when we have needed it, sometimes as a prep to a graded stakes. Most of her starts have been in open company.” As a three-year-old in 2012, she won the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride at Gulfstream Park and both the Grade 3 AppaIachian and Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth Cup at Keeneland. Her best race as a four-year-old was a second by a head in the Grade 1 First Lady Stakes at Keeneland, but she peaked as a five-year-old in 2014. After finishing second in the $100,000 De La Rose Stakes for New York-breds on August 2nd in her first start of the year, she swept the Yaddo, the Grade 1 First Lady and the Grade 1 $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf. Though she made just four starts last year, her $1.45 million in earnings led all New York-breds by a wide margin. Her career record is 11-for-18 with four seconds and earnings of more than $2.2 million. Zivo, a deep closer whom Brown says will return to racing this year as a six-year-old, was not precocious. “He worked his way up differently than Dayathtespa,” Brown said. “Zivo is a beautiful homebred.” Brown has done an absolutely masterful job of managing Zivo’s career. Unraced at two, the son of True Direction out of American Skipper by Quiet American made his debut at Aqueduct on March 18, 2012. He finished third that day, then third again before breaking his maiden at Belmont Park by three lengths on June 12. When he followed that with a game allowance victory by a neck, Brown entered him in his first stakes, the $150,000 Albany for three-year-old New York-breds at Saratoga. In a field of eight, he finished second by 6 ¼ lengths to Willy Beamin. In 2013, Zivo finished second by a head to Awesome Vision in the $100,000 Move It Now Stakes for New York-breds on November 16. Zivo made his first start in open company a month later, winning an allowance race by three-quarters of a length, the start of a six-race winning streak as he slowly worked his way up to elite open company. After winning a pair of New York-bred stakes, the $75,000 Whodam and the $100,000 Kings Point, he won a state-bred allowance race and another New York-bred stakes, the $200,000 Commentator. That convinced Brown to up the ante. He entered Zivo in the Grade 2 Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park last July 5. He’d earned that opportunity. “It was important for him to work his way up,” Brown said. “Whenever we loaded him in the gate, we put him in a race where he had a shot. He’s taken every step up. He really met every challenge we gave him. He’s just a remarkable horse.” Zivo won the Suburban going away by three lengths. Moved up to Grade I stakes company, Zivo finished fourth in the Woodward, a strong second in the Jockey Club Gold Cup and an extremely wide eighth in the 14-horse Breeders’ Cup Classic. That made him nine-for-18 lifetime with three seconds and four thirds, and more than $1 million in earnings. “Zivo’s getting time off in Ocala, and we’re planning his next season,” Brown said. 66

That’s not the only exciting news for racing fans. Palace and La Verdad are both coming back to race, too. Palace, a son of City Zip out of Receivership by End Sweep, will go down in history as one of racing’s greatest claims ever. “There are a lot of disappointments in racing along the way,” Rice said. “We’ve all had horses we were very excited about and things don’t go right. It’s horses like him that keep the game alive.” You don’t need a detective to figure out why Rice was attracted to Palace. “I trained City Zip,” she said. “I’m a big believer in him as a stallion. He’s done very well.” Rice is being modest. City Zip, who stands at Lane’s End in Kentucky, was the fourth leading sire in North America last year. As a racehorse, this $9,000 yearling made racing history at Saratoga in 2000, becoming just the fourth horse to sweep the three two-year-old stakes at the meet: the Sanford, Saratoga Special and, in a dead heat with $1.95 million two-year-old purchase Yonaguska during an intense thunderstorm, the Hopeful Stakes. Palace did nothing to suggest he had even a smidgeon of his sire’s talent. Originally owned by WinStar Farm, he began racing at three, finishing a distant third in two dirt starts at Saratoga. Switched to turf, he hit the starting gate at the start, then fell down in deep stretch. Just under one month later, he was entered back on dirt in a New York-bred maiden $20,000 claimer. Rice pounced on him. “In my mind, WinStar had tried him and I don’t think they cared too much if they lost him,” she said. “I thought he was a good property for the winter program. He’s done way better than that.” Palace’s new owner Antonino Miuccio, a legendary baker, has done pretty well himself. He was smart enough to bring his recipes from Italy with him to the United States in 1954 and, after settling in Albany, just a half hour south of Saratoga Race Course, he opened Nino’s Bakery, which is still doing well long after he sold it in the 1990s. He was then the baker at Aromi d’Italia in Guilderland, just outside of Albany. Though he retired years ago, his recipes for focaccia, an Italian flat bread, and pizza remain popular today. He owned horses briefly, then was out of racing for some 20 years. “Two years ago, he showed up at my barn one morning and introduced himself,” Rice said. “He said hadn’t owned horses for 20 years.” Their decision to claim Palace has certainly worked out well. “He’s a very sharp guy,” Rice said. “He really gives me the liberty to do my job. We took several breaks with Palace. He ran a couple sub-par races, and we turned him out for a couple of months. We’ve done that with Palace several times. He’s always great about that.” He’s obviously delighted that he returned to racing. “It gets inside you,” he said. “You’ve got to be lucky. When he does well, you feel good. For the people involved, too. You never know from today to tomorrow.” He knows he’s having fun with Palace. “Sure, I have a lot of fun,” he said. “Anybody has fun when they win.” Palace has given him many fun afternoons. In the race in which he was claimed by Miuccio, Palace won by 11 ¾ lengths as the even-money favorite. Then he won three more for his new connections, including an allowance victory in his first start in open company. After finishing first and fourth in two more turf starts in open allowance/optional $62,500 claiming company, he made his stakes debut in the $100,000 Chowder’s First Stakes for state-breds at Saratoga on August 23, 2013. He won by three lengths. Then he won the $150,000 Hudson Handicap for New York-breds at Belmont Park and his first open-company stakes, the Grade 3 Fall Highweight at Aqueduct, by a length and a half. Last year, after a spring freshening, he captured the Grade 2 True North and finished second by 6 ¼ lengths in the Grade 3 Belmont Sprint. Undeterred, Rice entered Palace in the Grade 1 Vanderbilt, which he won by a length. He then captured the Grade I Forego by 3 ½ lengths in the most powerful performance of his career. He concluded his five-year-old season by finishing third in the Grade I Vosburgh and a rough-trip sixth of 14 in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint. He has won 11 of his 23 lifetime starts with five seconds, three thirds and more than $1.3 million in earnings. 67

La Verdad appeared to be headed that way early in her career. The now-five-year-old daughter of Yes It’s True out of Noble Fire by Hook and Ladder, bred by Eklektikos Stable, followed a fourth in her debut as a threeyear-old on March 15th , 2013 by winning nine of her next 10 starts with one second, and that was in the Grade 2 Barbara Fritchie Handicap at Laurel on February 22nd of last year when she lost by a length. She followed that second with victories in the $100,000 Broadway Stakes for New York-breds on March 29, the Grade 2 Distaff by 3 ¾ lengths in her most dominant performance, then two more state-bred stakes: the $200,000 Critical Eye on Showcase Day at Belmont Park on May 31st and the $95,000 Dancin Rene at Belmont on July 3rd. At that point, her career record was 9-for-11 with one second and that fourth in her debut. “She’s always shown a lot of promise,” Rice said. “The surprising thing with La Verdad is not that she could win, but that she could win almost once a month for a year straight. Not many horses, let alone fillies, can do that.” Following the Dancin Rene, La Verdad finished fifth in both the Grade 2 Honorable Miss and the Grade I Ballerina to Artemis Agrotera, then a dead-game second by a head to Artemis Agrotera in the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom Handicap. She rebounded to win the $150,000 Iroquois for New York-breds on Belmont’s second Showcase Day on October 18th. Then Rice took a shot with La Verdad, asking her to face males in the Grade 3 Fall Highweight Handicap on November 27th. On a sloppy track she usually handles, she tired to last in the seven-horse field at 5-2 odds. Regardless, her six victories and two seconds in 11 starts helped her earn $632,400 last year, fifth among New York-breds. Rice is delighted La Verdad will be racing as a five-year-old: “She is turned out and is going to race another year.” So is Artemis Agrotera, who is returning to the racetrack for her four-year-old season. “We decided a month before the Breeders’ Cup to bring her back,” trainer Mike Hushion said on January 6. “It’ll be interesting to see what happens this year. Our plan is to have her go long.” The daughter of Roman Ruler out of Indy Glory by A.P. Indy has had an outstanding career with five victories, including the Grade I Frizette, the Grade 1 Ballerina and the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom Handicap, in eight starts. All three of her losses were in Grade 1 stakes: two Breeders’ Cup races at Santa Anita – on a track she didn’t appear to handle well – and in the Grade 1 Acorn in her first start as a three-year-old. Artemis Agrotera burst onto the racing scene at Saratoga in her debut on August 16th, 2013, when she won a New York-bred maiden special weight by 11 ¾ lengths as part of an entry at 2-5 odds. Hushion then asked her to take a gigantic step up in company in the Grade I Frizette at Belmont on October 5, and she won by a length and a quarter. That set her up for the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita. Sent off at 7-2 odds, she was a tiring fifth in the field of 10. When she returned to the races as a three-year-old in the Acorn, she was a badly tiring eighth. Hushion then made a great decision. To restore her confidence, he dropped her into a New York-bred allowance race, and she won by 10 ¼ lengths at 1-5 odds. In the Ballerina, she was magnificent, winning by 6 ½ lengths at Saratoga last August 23rd. Artemis Agrotera looked like she had no chance midway through her next race, the 6 ½-furlong Grade 2 Gallant Bloom Handicap at Belmont Park on September 20. Usually on the lead or close to it, she was fifth by 9 ½ lengths early, and sixth by 7 ½ after a half-mile as La Verdad continued to the lead. But Artemis Agrotera unleashed a powerful rally and got up in the final strides to win by a head. In her final start last year in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, she had a rough trip and was never really involved, finishing seventh in the field of 10. Regardless, she’s already earned $943,800 in just eight starts. 68

Other New York-breds won Grade 2 and Grade 3 stakes all over North America last year: at Aqueduct, Belmont Park, Saratoga, Laurel, Keeneland, Gulfstream Park and Woodbine. Len Riggio’s My Meadowview Farm’s homebred three-year-old colt Samraat stamped himself as a Triple Crown contender for trainer Rick Violette by winning the Grade 3 Withers and the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct a month apart on February 1st and March 1st. The son of Noble Causeway out of Little Indian Gal by Indian Charlie then finished second in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial, fifth in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby and sixth in the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes. Samraat was pointing to the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga when he suffered a fractured shin in a halfmile workout. With two victories and one second in five starts in 2014, he was fourth in earnings among New York-breds with $745,000, not far behind Palace ($797,500) in second and Zivo ($767,200) in third. Gallagher’s Stud’s six-year-old mare Inimitable Romanee, a daughter of Maria’s Mon out of Cellars Shiraz by Kissin Kris who was bred by Gallagher’s Shiraz LLC, won the Grade 3 The Very One Stakes at Gulfstream Park on February 15th, and the Grade 3 Bewitch Stakes at Keeneland on April 24th for trainer Graham Motion, who had an outstanding year in 2014, finishing seventh in earnings nationally with more than $10.5 million. Just five days after Inimitable Romanee’s victory in The Very One Stakes at Gulfstream, Hillwood Stable’s Bandbox captured the Grade 3 General George Handicap at Laurel. Trained by Rodney Jenkins, the six-yearold son of Tapit out of Empty the Bases by Grand Slam was bred by New Dawn Thoroughbreds and Aron Yagoda. On June 21st at Belmont Park, Roddy Valente, Darlene Bilinski and Charles Casale’s four-year-old filly Hot Stones won the Grade 3 Bed o’ Roses. Trained by Bruce Levine, Hot Stones is a daughter of Valente’s undefeated Bustin Stones out of Steamed Up by Freud who was bred by Valente and Bilinski’s husband Jerry. She had a solid campaign last year with three victories, one second, one third and earnings of $232,339, 20th best among New York-breds in 2014. Four Tags Stable’s six-year-old Hangover Kid won the Grade 2 Bowling Green Handicap at Belmont Park on July 12th. Trained by Jason Servis, Hangover Kid is a son of Lemon Drop Kid out of Absolute Patience by Rakeen who was bred by Steve Taglienti. Across the country on August 3rd, John Oxley’s two-year-old colt Skyway took the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar for trainer Mark Casse. Skyway is a son of Sky Mesa out of Bedside Manner by Dr. Blum who was bred by Sugar Maple Farm and H. Lewis Rapaport. Skyway began his career by winning a maiden special weight at Keeneland on April 5th by 6 ¾ lengths. He was third in the Grade 3 Bashford Manor at Churchill Downs before winning the Best Pal Stakes. He concluded his juvenile campaign with a fourth in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity and a sixth in the Grade I Frontrunner Stakes at Santa Anita. His two victories and a third in five starts helped him earn $175,540 last year. Another two-year-old colt, Klaravich Stables and William Lawrence’s Startup Nation, won two of four starts and earned $173,800 racing exclusively on grass. Trained by Chad Brown, Startup Nation is a son of Temple City out of Pennyrile by Wagon Limit who was bred by Spendthrift Farm. He began his career with a twolength victory in a New York-bred maiden special weight at Saratoga on August 7th, then won the Grade 2 With Anticipation Stakes by 4 ½ lengths at Saratoga exactly three weeks later. He was fourth as the 1-2 favorite in the Grade 3 Pilgrim Stakes at Belmont Park before finishing a wide 11th, beaten only 3 ¾ lengths, in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. It’s hard to imagine that Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s International Star could have a more apt name. The twoyear-old New York-bred colt journeyed to Woodbine to win the Grade 3 Grey Stakes on October 5th for trainer 69

Mike Maker. International Star is a son of Fusaichi Pegasus out of Parlez by who was bred by Katherine Voss and Robert Manfuo. Aliyu Ben J Stables’ seven-year-old homebred Lubash was 2014’s final New York-bred to win a graded stakes. On November 12th he scored in the Grade 3 Tropical Turf Handicap at Gulfstream Park West, formerly Calder Race Course. Christophe Clement trains Lubash, a son of Freud out of Nasty Cure by Cure the Blues. Lubash had a great seven-year-old season, posting four victories and three thirds in seven starts and earning $311,720. The first of three Showcase Days in 2014 was May 31st at Belmont Park, with six NY-bred stakes races. Two of them, the $200,000 Critical Eye and the $200,000 Commentator Handicap, were won by La Verdad and Zivo, respectively. Other winners were Very Un Stable’s homebred Mah Jong Maddnes in the $125,000 Mount Vernon Stakes; Paul Braverman and Timothy Pinch’s Kharafa, bred by Highmeadow Farm, in the $125,000 Kingston Stakes; William Schettine’s Isabelle, bred by Bluegrass Farm Partners and Jeffrey Tucker, in the $125,000 Bouwerie Stakes; and Barry Schwartz’s homebred Captain Serious in the $125,000 Mike Lee Stakes, named for the famous racing writer. Dayatthespa’s victory in the $150,000 Yaddo Stakes was one of six stakes on the second Showcase Day at Saratoga on August 24th. The other victors were Gerald and Susan Kresa’s King Kreesa, bred by Horse Partners, in the $150,000 West Point Stakes; Chester and Mary Broman’s homebred Star Grazing in the $200,000 Fleet Indian Stakes; Patricia Shuler’s So Lonesome, bred by Waterville Lake Stables, in the $200,000 Albany Stakes; Clear Stars Stable’s Myfourchix, bred by Charles Kidder and Nancy Cole, in the $200,000 Seeking the Ante Stakes; and Ralph Evans’ Upstart, bred by Mrs. Gerald Nielsen, in the $200,000 Funny Cide Stakes, named for the New York-bred who won both the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby and the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes in 2003. There were eight state-bred stakes contested on the third Showcase Day at Belmont Park on October 18th. Two of the winners were Kharafa in the $200,000 Mohawk Stakes and La Verdad in the $150,000 Iroquois Stakes. Albert Fried, Jr.’s homebred Moonlight Song captured the $150,000 Hudson Handicap. One of the most talented New York-bred grass fillies ever, Patricia Generazio’s homebred Discreet Marq, earned her only victory in seven 2014 starts by taking the $200,000 Ticonderoga Stakes for trainer Christophe Clement. Barry Schwartz’s homebred Princess Violet, trained by Mike Hushion, took the $250,000 Empire Distaff Handicap. Another homebred, Eric Fein’s Ostrolenka, took the $250,000 Sleepy Hollow. Marc Keller’s Quezon, bred by Apache Farm, won the $250,000 Maid of the Mist Stakes. As it is every year, the highlight of Showcase Day was the $300,000 Empire Classic Handicap. Tri-Bone Stables’ three-year-old colt Effinex won the mile-and-an-eighth stakes by a neck over So Lonesome, a horse he had finished second to by four lengths to in the Albany Stakes. The son of Mineshaft out of What a Pear by E Dubai was bred by Dr. Russell S. Cohen and is trained by Jimmy Jerkens. After the Albany Stakes, Effinex finished third by 10 lengths in a state-bred allowance race. Jerkens decided to add blinkers for the Empire Classic Handicap, and they seemed to make all the difference in the world as he won at 17-1 odds. In his next start, Effinex finished fourth in a field of 11 in the Grade 2 Hawthorne Gold Cup at 3-1 odds. There was more high-profile New York-bred stakes racing right through the last day of the year. Both the $100,000 Bay Ridge Stakes and the $100,000 Alex M. Robb Stakes were contested December 31 on the inner dirt track at Aqueduct, and the fields demonstrated the astonishing depth of quality New York-breds these days. Twelve fillies and mares were entered in the Bay Ridge, and every single one had career earnings of more than $100,000. Tri County Stables’ homebred three-year-old filly Storied Lady won the Bay Ridge for trainer John Hertler. Storied Lady is a daughter of Read the Footnotes out of Wide Barrel by Broad Brush who has won four of her 14 dirt starts with one second, four thirds and earnings topping $240,000. All eight colts and geldings entered in the Alex M. Robb had career earnings topping $150,000. Gary Barber’s six-year-old gelding Big Business won the stakes for trainer David Jacobson. Beautyinthepulpit was second, 70

West Hills Giant third and Effinex fourth. Big Business is a son of Eddington out of Spanish Guitar by Birdonthewire who was bred by Henthorn Racing, Inc. The victory was Big Business’s 11th in 33 career starts with 10 seconds and five thirds, and it capped an outstanding season. In 2014, Big Business posted three victories, five seconds and one third in 10 starts. His $389,500 in earnings was 10th best among New Yorkbreds.

Breeding Big Brown, already an accomplished stallion before relocating to Dutchess Views Farms in New York in 2015, is one of many attractive stallions standing in the state. He ranked 63rd in progeny earnings in 2014, 21st among two-year-old sires and fifth among third-crop sires. Overall, Big Brown sired 74 winners and 11 stakes winners. Freud, who stands at Sequel Stallions, and Posse, standing at Rockridge Stud, both finished higher than Big Brown in overall progeny earnings last year. Freud was 59th and Posse 62nd. Posse was 42nd and Freud 58th among two-year-old sires. Last year, Freud sired 78 winners and seven stakes winners. Posse sired 93 winners and eight stakes winners. Two successful New York stallions died last year: Noble Causeway, who was 121st in progeny earnings, and Disco Rico, who stood at Keane Stud and was ranked 138th. Congaree and Stonesider, who both stand at Saratoga Stud, were 129th and 149th in progeny earnings, respectively. Among first-crop sires, Sequel Stallions’ Desert Party was 13th. Desert Party was also 74th among two-year-old sires. Waldorf Farms’ Musket Man finished 26th; Dr Large, standing at Banahan Farms, was 32nd; 34th-place finisher Harlem Rocker was pensioned; Justenuffhumor, standing at McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds, was ranked 44th; Sir Whimsey, standing at In Front Training Center, was 86th; Marsh Side, standing at Dutchess Views Farm, was 89th; and Cohn Farm’s Malibu Moonshine was 100th. * “Foal crops are estimated based on the Report of Mares Bred, scheduled to be filed by Aug. 1 of each breeding season. Foal registration is to be completed within 12 months of the birth of the foal. However, late registration is available for an additional fee, making actual foal crop counts impractical before Dec. 31 of the crop's two-year-old year, the time by which the vast majority of the foal crop has been registered."

Promotion Advertising The Fund uses advertising to inform the Thoroughbred community within and outside of New York State about the benefits of breeding and racing registered New York-breds. The Fund has a special responsibility to serve those who already breed or race horses here. We communicate directly with stakeholders by posting information on our website (www.NYBreds.com), including messages with award check mailings, and personally handling e-mails and phone calls every day as we serve all of our stakeholders. Beyond that, the Fund uses its promotional budget to inform potential breeders and owners that “NY-Breds Start with an Advantage” and that they should therefore “Get with the Program.” Details of that program are included earlier in this report in the Overview section. The Fund’s largest contract is with the New York Thoroughbred Breeders, Inc. (NYTB, Inc.), a Saratoga-based membership and trade group. The group hosts events for its membership that are tied to the seasonal interests of its breeder members, and runs a website (NYTBreeders.org) that complements the Fund’s website (NYBreds.com). The NYTB site allows breeders to review race videos, entries and results, as well as detailed write-ups of stakes wins and impressive maiden and allowance win by registered New York-breds. The NYTB promotional reports can be found on pages 110 to 115. Advertising Platforms in 2014 · · · · · · · · · · ·

During 2014, the Ad Hoc Committee on Advertising*, consisting of Chairman William B. Wilmot, DVM and members Jeff Cannizzo and Joseph McMahon, as well as Fund Executive Director Tracy Egan, decided collaboratively where promotional money was best spent. The Thoroughbred Daily News/TDN has become the number-one promotional outlet for the Fund. It is widely touted as the best way to reach decision-makers in the Thoroughbred industry as we promote the purchase of registered NY-breds and try to recruit quality stallions and mares to New York. For the first time in 2014, the Fund paid for spots and promotion on Horse Racing TV (HRTV). The “spots” were 30-second commercials touting the advantages of owning a NY-bred. The promotional end of the equation had HRTV announcers informing viewers every time a NY-bred won an open maiden, allowance or stakes race. Additionally, with each NY-bred win they would roll out a graphic that had an NYTB image on the top and 99

NYBREDS.com image on the bottom as the horse headed to the winner’s circle. It is fortunate that the Fund requested this advertising first, as other state’s breeding groups responded to our ads by approaching HRTV about placing similar ads for their state-breds. WTEN-TV did a fine job helping the Fund produce and air a commercial with the message “We mean business to NY.” Indeed, Thoroughbred breeding and racing accounts for a significant portion of the economic impact that equine pursuits have on New York State ($4.2 billion). However, we learned from this advertising experiment that making a serious impact in the collective mind of the public requires a great deal of expensive messaging on several stations in a market. The Blood-Horse is the only nationwide Thoroughbred magazine left standing, and it provided both print and online exposure for the Fund’s promotional campaigns during 2014. HRRN aired radio commercials for the Fund, and even covered many NY-bred stakes races. Their presence online and on SiriusXM satellite radio, as well as on more than 140 terrestrial-based radio stations, provided access to millions of listeners and, most importantly, to owners, breeders and trainers in the Thoroughbred industry in the United States and abroad. What follows are samples of print and online ads that ran during 2014. We start the year with bloodstock recruitment, spotlight NY-bred performers on the Derby trail and auctions of NY-breds, and end with a Breeders’ Cup win that led to an Eclipse Award. * The Ad Hoc Committee on Advertising was established during the Board meeting of December 17, 2013.

Scholarships

Fund Scholarship Winners for 2014 “I am writing to say thank you very much for a wonderful day at the track for college day. I had a great time and it was amazing receiving the scholarship in the winner's circle. This means everything to me and this will lead me to a bright future.” Stephanie Salvato, scholarship winner

The gratitude expressed by Stephanie Salvato and the other students pictured above has been echoed by all of the winners of the New York Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund scholarships since we initiated the scholarship program in 2012. The 2014 scholarship winners were publicly recognized for their achievements during the presentation of a symbolic check on July 25, 2014 at Saratoga Race Course. The scholarship winners were selected because they have demonstrated through their course selections, internships and attitude towards school, work and horses that they hope to pursue a career in New York State's Thoroughbred breeding or racing industries. Scholarship Winners by College SUNY Cobleskill Sophomore Hanna Stark of Ghent, NY hopes to train both racehorses and work with retired racehorses upon graduation. She has already worked at Mike Shrader’s In Front Training Center and at a Thoroughbred retirement facility. Stephanie Salvato of Moreau, NY expects to graduate from Cobleskill in December 2015 and further her career either at the racetrack or on a farm. She is already a NYS licensed groom, an accomplished rider, and a whitecap at Saratoga Race Course. She will be doing a seven-month internship at Pin Oak Stud in Kentucky beginning in the spring of 2015. 116

Cornell College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Sophomore Jessica White hopes to make a career in the horse-racing industry upon graduation, having “grown up” on the backside of Hawthorne and Arlington race tracks. From Marengo, Illinois, Jessica is a pre-vet student and hopes to combine her horse knowledge with work experience as a guest services representative for Arlington International Racecourse when she graduates in 2016. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine Student Denise Branecky, from Newtown, CT, is well on her way to becoming a licensed veterinarian. She was taking part in an externship in Colorado, so she is not in the winner’s circle photo. During 2013 and 2014, Denise was an assistant at the Cornell Univ. Hospital for Animals - Equine and Farm Animal Hospital in Ithaca, NY. Below is a picture of Denise taking a respiratory rate at a Rolex event at the Kentucky Horse Park.

Morrisville State College Colleen Fox of Gloversville, NY expects to graduate in 2015 with a degree in Equine Racing Management. Upon graduation, she hopes to become a trainer's assistant and eventually open her own training stable on the New York circuit. Colleen says since the first time she watched a horse race she has been in love with the sport. Batavia, NY resident Hannah Hoskins was working in 2014 to obtain a degree in Thoroughbred Racing Management. She has already gained experience getting Thoroughbreds ready for the sales ring, and has interned through Morrisville State College's Racing program at the track. Her post-graduation goals would be worthy of emulation by any trainer. Hannah states “I hope to develop a healthy, successful workplace for both people and horses, and I’m confident my experience and knowledge gained from Morrisville will give me the tools to achieve this.” The Fund congratulates all of the scholarship winners and looks forward to seeing them on New York’s Thoroughbred farms or racetracks. 117

Client Education and Support of Ex-Racehorses The Fund in 2014 expanded its role beyond promoting the ownership of NY-breds to include more stakeholder education and a higher level of promotional spends in support of the use of Thoroughbred racehorses in second careers when they leave the racetrack. Our founding statutes require the Fund to “promote among youth an interest in Thoroughbred breeding and racing and agriculture in general...” Hence, our events supported Thoroughbreds, hands-on horse people and young people who hope one day to be involved with horses. Among the events and organizations we supported through a total of more than $75,000 in promotional spending during 2014 are the following: · · · · ·
