April Webinar Slides 1. 1. WelcomeToThe Webinar 2. 2. 2 Welcome To Our Webinar Alysse Metzler • 11 years total Corporate Recruiting Experience • Starred in Hit Reality Show, “Top Recruiter”, the Competition • Owner of Career Innovations, LLC • Self-Published Author of “The Recruiting Snitch, Recruiting Secrets to Help Land Your Dream Job” 3. 3. 3 Today’s Topic 5 4 3 2 1 Resume writing to get yourself noticed. How to understand which jobs you are qualified for. How to properly prepare for a phone interview to make the best first impression. How to figure out the questions the interviewers will ask you in an onsite interview. The art of networking. 4. 4. 4 Amount of Time Recruiters Spent Looking At A Resume 5. 5. 5Your Resume Your Resume is your advertisement. It’s the ticket for your interview. You don’t need to put everything you’ve ever done in your professional life on it. You need to tailor your resume for every single job you are applying to. 6. 6. 6 Recruiter’s Preference: 7. 7. 7 What is a career summary? Example #1 • Worked both as a crew member and independently • Get along well with employers and coworkers • Experienced in customer 6 Recruiter’s Preference: relations • Self-motivated; able to learn on own initiative • Excellent record of dependability and reliability • Versatile and multi-skilled person Example #2 • Strong skills in organizing workflow, ideas, materials, people • Hired, trained and supervised work crews • In-depth knowledge of ______(fill in the blank) • Proficient in the use of computers • Sensitive, caring and professional attitude toward staff, patients, and their families • Responsible, dependable, punctual; take pride in work • Skilled at working with people with diverse backgrounds • Excellent leadership skills and training CS is 3-5 sentences that summarizes who you are as a professional and why you are qualified for the role you are applying to. Use the Job Description to help identify the areas of expertise, distinction, traits, and related experiences you have without using the words “I” or “My”. 8. 8. 8 Question: What makes your resume stick out? How are you any different than the other Community Service Crew Leaders, Transportation Technical Assistants, Waste Reduction Specialists, 911 Operators, Station Attendants, Landscape Technicians, and so on? Answer: Your achievements! 9. 9. 9 Don’t list a bunch of responsibilities, list achievements, results, outcomes, and special things you did that was above the others in your role. For Example: • Childcare AttendantProgram Specialist • Engaged in the safety, well-being and development of children ages 3 months-6 years, resulting in zero emergencies or incidence reports filed for 3 years in a row. • Provided and created a positive experience for all children that lead to a 20% growth in attendance over a 6 month period. Created a new check in and checkout policy to ensure top notch security for the children and families. 10. 10. 10 11. 11. 11 You will not hear back from every job you applied to. If you are not hearing back then maybe you were not as qualified as another candidate. There are many variations of passages of lorem ipsum available, but the majority have suffered alteration in some form, by injected humour, or randomized words which don't look even slightly believable. Sending out a million applications and not hearing back? 12. 12. 12Application Process Read the entire job description. If you don’t meet at least 3 of the REQUIRED qualifications, DO NOT APPLY. Finding a job is a full time job. Stay positive and be productive. Take the time to fill out the forms 100%. Recruiting systems will not take your application in consideration if you don’t take the time to upload your resume or complete all the fields. It is NOT a numbers game. Be laser focused with your applications. Only apply to jobs where you meet the minimum qualifications. Create a notebook, spreadsheet, word doc, whatever you are comfortable using and create a table to list and track all jobs you apply to. Include: • The date you applied. • The name of the company. • The Job Title. • The reason you applied to the job. • Why you are qualified for the job. 13. 13. 13 Cooking Instructor - Fine Arts Program Specialist Qualifications • Must be at least 18 years of age • Experience delivering culinary instruction to children/youth ages 13-17 and/or adults • Completion of formal chef training is preferred • Demonstrated ability to teach or mentor in culinary arts • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in a 7 What is a career summary? Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit and access to a vehicle is a requirement of this position • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton 14. 14. 14 Heavy Equipment Technician Qualifications • Recognized Journeyman certification in the Trade of Heavy Equipment Technician (H.E.T.) • Valid Alberta Class 3 driver's license (or provincial equivalent) with Air Brake Endorsement; obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position; eligible to be licensed by the Province of Alberta to do Commercial Vehicle Inspections (CVIP) • Able to locate, diagnose and repair malfunctions in spark-ignition and diesel engines, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and heavy duty power trains • Capable of competently using vehicle diagnostic computer programs • Able to accurately enter data and information into a computer (AssetWorks M5 experience is an asset) • Committed to safety using occupational health and safety and environmental standards and procedures • Strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills • Able to understand, communicate, read and write English at a level needed to meet job-related task and safety requirements • Demonstrated good work ethic and a willingness/ability to learn and mentor on the job and update skills • Capable of passing a job-related physical abilities evaluation (includes lifting 75 pounds) and a City medical examination 15. 15. 15 Take the time to tailor your resume to speak directly to the job you are applying to. You will have a better return on your time by spending 20 minutes to customize your resume and 30 minutes sending your resume to 20 jobs that you aren’t qualified for. 16. 16. 16Phone Interview Congratulations you received a phone interview! Now what? 17. 17. 17Phone Interview The goals and direction of the company Customer reviews What does the company exactly do? Press Releases/News • Schedule a time where you know you will be available to sit in a quite location. • Research the company Where are all the locations of the company BBB 18. 18. 18Phone Interview Write down 4-5 questions you want to ask based on your research. What is the long term and short term career path for this position? If I were to be hired, what would you expect from me the first month to 3 months? What type of training do you provide to set your employees up for success? How often are performance reviews done and is feedback provided on a regular basis? What is your favorite part about working here? What is the biggest challenge I would be facing in this position? What are the next steps? 19. 19. 19Phone Interview Questions What Questions Shouldn’t You Ask? • Don’t ask about the vacation or sick day policy. • Don’t ask how much the position pays. • Don’t ask if there are places to smoke outside the building. • Don’t ask anything personal about the interviewer. 20. 20. 20Preparing For A Phone Interview Make sure your resume is pulled up in front of you to reference during the phone interview. Review the job description and be ready to provide examples of when you’ve performed all requirements for the position. Smile when you talk, be energetic, passionate, and be happy to take the call. Make it sound like you’ve been eagerly waiting the whole day to talk to the interviewer. 21. 21. Become a mind reader. You can figure out what they are going to ask you in an interview. Yes, that’s correct! How? 22. 22. The job description will tell you exactly what they are going to ask you. It’s the simple. Let’s look at an example… 23. 23. 23Example: What’s in BOLD, will be asked. Sales Customer Service Representative Are you sales focused and ready to provide unsurpassed customer service? If you are a proactive individual, have an ability to learn and work in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment, then you have what it takes to be successful working for AAA. The AAA Member Representative provides support services to Members including: Sell and service travel and membership products (car, hotel, basic tour packages, etc.) Conduct outbound promotional calls for insurance and/or travel Provide travel information including triptiks, tour books, maps, etc.

Past performance predicts future performance. Example, “Give me an example of when you have worked in a high volume or and fast paced environment.” 25. 25. 25 Behavioural Based Questions How to Answer Behavior Based Interviewing Questions. Stay out of the “would” and reach for the S.T.A.R.s Situation-What was going on at the moment at your job that lead to you taking action? Task- What was the task or goal presented to you? Action-What did you do to accomplish this goal? Result-What was the outcome? 26. 26. 268 Questions 8 Questions You Should Have Answers To: Give me an example of when you’ve… Why do you want to work here? Why we should hire you? What makes you 8 Question: What makes your resume stick out? How are you any different than the other Community Service Crew Leaders, Tra... better than the others who applied? Professional and personal goals, long and short term. Strengths and Weaknesses What are you passionate about? What do you do on your free time? What would your ideal job look like and working environment? What type of Manager do you work best with? 27. 27. 27Networking Networking is about connecting, not collecting. You may have an edge on the competition by knowing someone, however, the person who referred you can’t give you all of the qualifications or interview for you. 28. 28. 28Networking When you apply to a job, try to research a contact person at that company. Linkedin! Email or call that person, 3 days after applying to the job (See now why you track this down in a notebook?) Sample on next slide Get out of your house and make a goal to meet with someone weekly. Opportunities will not just fall into your hand. You will have to literally get yourself up and out to find them. 29. 29. 29Example: Hello Cindy, I hope you are having a great day and I want to thank you for taking the time to read this email. I’m reaching out because I recently applied to the Customer Service position at XXX. I’ve done a quite a bit of research on your company and I’m eager to be a part of the team. Can you please point me in the right direction to follow up on my application? I appreciate you helping me in my efforts. Thank you again for your time and I look forward to hearing back from you soon. Kindest Regards, Alysse Metzler 30. 30. 30Etiquette When applying to a job it’s important to follow some basic etiquette. • When you are call a Recruiter or a company and they don’t pick up, leave a voicemail. Don’t just keep calling without leaving a voicemail. • Once you leave a voicemail wait at least 3 days before you call back again, you don’t want to annoy the Recruiter. • When you receive a call from a company, act excited, smile, sound enthusiastic. If they called at a bad time please let them know and ask what time would work better to call back. • When a Recruiter calls for a scheduled phone interview, be in a quiet place, have your research done, don’t have any distractions. • If you can’t make the scheduled phone interview, call or email to reschedule. Never stand up a company or Recruiter. • Always send a thank you email (within 24 hours) after you hear from a company. • If a company reaches out to you via email, respond back in a professional manner. An email is not a text message. 31. 31. 31 THANK YOU FOR ATTENDING Visit Alysse’s Website: www.recruitingsnitch.com Questions? Connect with us on Social Media http://bit.ly/CoeContent Recommended
